Mildred’s Chowder House, originally located at 251 Iyannough Road in Hyannis, opened in 1949. It was a modest spot with a dining room seating 44 and 10 seats at the counter, quickly becoming a local favorite for its homemade clam chowder. Its success led to a larger, second location built in 1957 at 290 Iyannough Road, diagonally across from Barnstable Airport. This new spot offered a casual, Cape Cod-themed atmosphere with fishing and ocean decor, attracting both locals and visitors alike.
The second location flourished, becoming a must-visit destination for its iconic chowder and cozy vibe. The restaurant was frequented by notable patrons, including President John F. Kennedy. After decades of success, Mildred’s closed in 2000, and the building was eventually demolished in 2005. Today, the site of the original restaurant is now Island Cafe and Grill and the second location is vacant, with only an overgrown parking lot remaining 😞.
